Maya Health Alliance

Guatemala is one of the poorest countries in Latin America. A large proportion of the population is indigenous Maya and does not have access to health care in their own language. Wuqu' Kawoq is a major provider of primary health care in Mayan languages, principally Kaqchikel and K'ichee'

Community Health Education

In collaboration with Cultural Survival and Kaqchikel Cholchi', we have begun to produce radio spots in Kaqchikel about common health conditions and remedies. This and similar projects are provided as a service to the community.

Tuj

Translation

What is bothering you, ma'am?

My whole body hurts. I have no energy. It all started when I got pregnant. Not to mention that I haven't started to lactate.

Poor thing! Have you taken an herbal sauna since you got pregnant?

No, ma'am. I haven't used the sauna at all.

You have to find a midwife. She'll give you a sauna or two and soon enough you'll start to lactate.

Thank you ma'am. I'll surely do it!

The traditional Maya sauna does great things for our bodies. A message brought to you by Wuqu' Kawoq, Kaqchikel Cholchi, and Cultural Survival.

XAQIXAQ

Translation

Good morning, Ma'am. Would you take a look at my child. She just cries and cries and her stomach hurts.

Let me see the child and I'll feel her stomach. Ah yes, she has worms and they're growing inside her. Boil some xaqixaq and give a little of the liquid to her. Xaqixaq is excellent for killing intestinal parasites.

But Ma'am, what is "xaqixaq"?

Oh, that plant is called "wormwood".

Ah, thank you. I'll go do what you suggested.

Plant-based medicine can do good things for your body. A message brought to you by Wuqu' Kawoq, Kaqchikel Cholchi, and Cultural Survival

Translation

Ma'am, why are you taking care of those weeds on your porch?

Those aren't weeds, child. That's called Eya'. You take it if your stomach hurts. That one there is Rora. You can use it on an eye infection. This one here is called Sik'ij. You can use that if you have stomach parasites.

Wow, thought they were just weeds! Now I want to use plant-based medicine too!
